The Maya Mountains of Belize

The Maya Mountains are a range of peaks that are primarily located in Belize but also in the eastern part of Guatemala. The Maya Mountains begin in the western part of the country and gently slope eastward until the coast.

The Maya Mountains are a relatively short range of peaks, the highest point being Doyle’s Delight in Cayo District, which measures approximately 3,680 feet (1,124 meters) tall. Doyle’s Delight is named after Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the author of the Sherlock Holmes mysteries. In 1912, Doyle wrote a book called The Lost World which refers to Belize mountains as beautiful and wild places.

The second-highest peak of the Maya Mountains is Victoria Peak in Stann Creek District in eastern Belize. Victoria Peak measures approximately 3,670 feet (1,120 meters) tall. Victoria Peak is classified as a Natural Monument and is located inside the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary.

While both of the tallest peaks are difficult to reach, the Maya Mountains remain a top attraction in Belize due to their amazing views, unspoiled landscapes, the abundance of wildlife, and the number of waterfalls found in the area. Many of Belize’s national forests and protected conservation areas are found partially or wholly inside the Maya Mountain range.

Anyone considering some Belize travel should definitely consider visiting the Maya Mountains. Belize tours of the area include hiking to the top of 1,000 Foot Falls (actually 1,600 feet high), horseback riding, bird watching, canoeing, and visiting ancient Maya sites such as Lubaantun and Cahal Pech which were built on the periphery of the Maya Mountains. Tikal, in Guatemala, is also located adjacent to the Maya Mountains.

Belize vacations in this region also include activities like caving and cave tubing, the latter a uniquely Belizean activity involving using an inner tube to float down placid underground rivers. The town of San Ignacio is also located adjacent to the Maya Mountains, making it an ideal place to stay for travelers wishing to explore this region. The Maya Mountains can also be seen by car as the Hummingbird Highway crosses through the mountain range between San Ignacio and Dangriga.

If you’d like to explore the Maya Mountains, be sure to book your travels with Chabil Mar, the award-winning luxury Belize resort located on the Placencia Peninsula. Chabil Mar specializes in creating custom Belize vacation packages that include lodging, transportation, meals, and tours of both the Belizean mainland and offshore reef.

How Spending Time Outdoors in Belize is Good for Your Health

Belize is Good for Your Health

It’s the healthiest place in Central America in addition to being so much fun. Visit Belize and discover why Science Daily proves that there’s a relationship between good health and the great outdoors.

University of East Anglia studies prove “that exposure to greenspace reduces the risk of type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease, premature death, preterm birth, stress and high blood pressure.” This data was gathered from 290 million people across the globe, so this is no wimpy research study.

Why mention this? Because we all want to stay healthy so we don’t miss out on life’s adventures, many of which can be found only in Belize. Next time someone asks you why you chose Belize over other vacation spots, tell them that this nation offers endless opportunities to pursue healthy activities. Here are just a few of them!

Belize is more than a place: It’s a state of mind

-“Bathe” in Belize’s lush forests. No undressing required. In Japan, forest bathing is a ritual undertaken by people eager to enhance their physical and mental health.

-Bathe in the sun, too. Soak in vitamin D that helps you absorb calcium and lift your spirits. A daily dose of Belize sun can boost your immune system and soothe you, too.

-Discover Belize’s people and culture by biking or hiking. Picturesque towns filled with local color beckon visitors eager to walk and browse or bicycle around. Find out what it’s like to do both without dodging traffic.

-Partake of water sports that make Belize the recreational capital of the Caribbean. Kayak, swim, sail and enjoy the rush as your heart pumps, muscles react and adrenaline courses through your body.

-Find inspiration everywhere. From hundreds of ancient Maya ruins to breathtaking waterfalls, jungles and wildlife, Belize is a treat for the eye, body and soul. You will need extra batteries for your camera.

21 Reasons to Get Married in Belize

belize wedding packages all inclusive

Do you crave a destination wedding but the distance issue is scary? No worries. Belize is fast becoming the destination wedding capital of Central America and resorts like Chabil Mar have a talent for turning even small celebrations into extravaganzas. From basic arrangements to all-inclusive packages customized to suit your taste and budget, why go elsewhere?

Here are 21 great reasons to get married in Belize:

1. You don’t have to feed the multitudes, including Aunt Mary who ruins most weddings anyway. Enjoy a lavish wedding for less cash because your wedding party is likely to be small enough to make the day both lavish and affordable.

2. Your photos will be perfect–especially if taken late in the day when golden rays of the sun make everybody look gorgeous, even mothers-in-law!

3. Find out who your real friends are. Invite your nearest and dearest; if they can’t get to your Belize affair, you know where you stand.

4. Make other newlywed connections. Since Belize is fast-becoming Central America’s wedding destination, you could bond with other newlyweds and stay in touch over the years.

5. Save money. According to The Knot, today’s average 150-guest wedding averages $29,000 USD. Compare that to a full-blown Chabil Mar affair. If your party is big enough, reserve the entire resort just for your big day.

6. Everyone speaks English in Belize. Forget struggling with a second language as you put together your wedding celebration using skilled Chabil Mar event planners.

7. Beach? Jungle? Waterfall? All things are possible in this wonderland, so whether you want your wedding on a beach, in a cave, at a Mayan ruin or at a quaint local church, your choices are unlimited.

8. Save a bundle on your honeymoon. You’re already in Belize. Voila! Instant honeymoon.

9. The food is delish. Treat your guests to gourmet meals prepared by Chabil Mar chefs skilled in European cookery and ethnically-rich plates that reflect Belize’s diverse cultures.

10. Your host does all the work. Included in Chabil Mar’s basic wedding package are the honeymoon suite, bouquets, beach or pier deck ceremony, help with your license and tropical reception, all at one price.

11. Chabil Mar offers a wide range of extras, like reception planning, couples massages, in-country airfare, photographer, videographer and even clergy.

12. It’s easy to get a marriage license. Show up three days before the big day. Present your passport with photo as proof of the day you arrived in Belize and you’re done.

13. Your marriage will be recognized everywhere, so it’s just as official in Belize as it would be if you exchanged vows in Ottawa, Detroit or Los Angeles.

14. The weather is divine. Year-round. Seriously.

15. Wear what you like. White gown. Floral sarong. Bedazzled pedal pushers. Swimsuit. Bridal Fashion Police officials avoid Belize, so don anything you fancy.

16. No clothing restrictions for guests, either. Inform guests that your ceremony and/or reception is to be held on a boat, on the beach or at Chabil Mar Resort so they can wear whatever they consider appropriate.

17. It’s easy to get to Belize. Anyone wishing to attend your wedding can find lots of flights from Mexico, the U.S. and Canada. Adventurous guests may wish to make your event the object of a long and relaxing road trip!

18. Stress-free planning. Use your phone or the Internet to do all of your planning with Chabil Mar staff. Since no grumpy, frazzled couples are permitted in Belize, you fly down and hit the beach to get the tan other couples pay for at tanning beds back home.

19. Save on pricey décor because Mother Nature is another of your wedding planners. Brides lament that their floral bill is as daunting as a student loan, but in Belize, everything is perpetually in bloom.

20. Take advantage of rate drops during low season at Chabil Mar and save even more on airfares and accommodations so you can spend it on the reception instead.

21. Make exceptional memories. This reason to marry in Belize is strictly up to you!

A Guide to What You Can See While Snorkeling in Belize

A Guide to What You Can See While Snorkeling in Belize

The MesoAmerican Barrier Reef is the world’s second largest, spanning 600 miles from the Yucatan Peninsula to Honduras. The 180 mile Belize Barrier Reef is part of this system. It provides a unique marine ecosystem for snorkelers of all levels to explore.

The ecosystem comprises not just the coral reefs but also mangrove forests, lagoons and coastal wetlands. Here are some of the wonders you might see while snorkeling in Belize’s clear turquoise waters:

Yellowtail Damselfish

This brilliantly colored fish can be found among the corals as well. It is unique among fish because it “farms” red algae which is one of its primary food sources.

Manta Rays

Known as “gentle giants”, these are the largest of the rays. They can reach 20 feet from tip to tip and weigh over 3000 pounds. While they prefer the open sea, they sometimes glide over the reef into Belize’s coastal waters. There, you can approach them, but be aware – they have been known to jump up to 15 feet from the water!

Caribbean Dolphin

Another species known for its acrobatic leaps is this variant of the bottlenose dolphin. This gentle and playful animal may be spotted off the coast of Placencia.

Parrot Fish

It’s a delight to swim in schools of these beautiful fish as their scales sparkle in sunlight. They come in gorgeous colors, but are not merely decorative. They also help to build Belize’s beaches. Their teeth grind up coral rock into fine sand.

Green Moray Eel

You will find their distinctive bottle green heads peaking out from holes in the coral. These eels can grow up to 8 feet long and used to be mistaken for sea serpents!

belize sharks

Nurse Sharks

While they can grow up to 14 feet long, nurse sharks are gentle. They will let you swim near as they cruise the reefs and mangroves. Their skin is smooth, which you will discover if you gently stroke one. Imagine telling your friends you swam with the sharks and even touched one!

Vase Sponge

Characterized by a large bell shape, this sponge can grow up to 3 feet high. It ranges in color from purple to red to brown and is found attached to rocks in Belize’s lagoons.

Sea Turtles

The waters of Belize are home to three varieties of sea turtle: the loggerhead, green and hawksbill. Since 1993 these have been protected species and are thriving in many locations such as Glover’s Reef Atoll.
