Discover Garifuna Culture this November at Belize’s Garifuna Settlement Day

Garifuna Settlement Day, celebrated annually on November 19th, is a vibrant and deeply meaningful event in Belize that honors the arrival of the Garifuna people to the country’s shores in 1802. The Garifuna people, descendants of West African, Carib, and Arawak ancestry, brought with them a rich cultural heritage that continues to shape the identity of Belize today. Their culture is a blend of music, dance, art, and storytelling, which is showcased in full force during this national holiday.

Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a lover of cultural experiences, or simply someone looking to immerse yourself in the local traditions of Belize, Garifuna Settlement Day is an event you won’t want to miss. With Chabil Mar as your home base, you’ll be perfectly situated to take part in the festivities while enjoying the luxurious comfort of one of Belize’s premier resorts.

The History and Significance of Garifuna Settlement Day

Garifuna Settlement Day

The origins of Garifuna Settlement Day trace back to a significant moment in Belizean history. The Garifuna people, originally from the island of St. Vincent, were displaced after resisting European colonization. They eventually found refuge along the coast of Central America, with the southern shores of Belize becoming one of their new homes. In 1941, Garifuna Settlement Day was officially declared a public holiday in the Stann Creek and Toledo Districts, and in 1977, it became a national holiday celebrated across the country.

The celebration commemorates the arrival of the Garifuna people and their contributions to Belizean culture. The day is marked by reenactments of the Garifuna’s arrival by canoe, a symbol of their journey to freedom and safety. As the canoes reach the shore, vibrant ceremonies follow, featuring traditional drumming, dancing, and the sharing of Garifuna cuisine. For many Belizeans and visitors, Garifuna Settlement Day is an opportunity to appreciate the perseverance and cultural richness of this remarkable community.

Experience the Vibrant Festivities

 Garifuna culture Belize

The Garifuna Settlement Day celebrations in Belize are nothing short of spectacular. The days leading up to November 19th are filled with cultural events, including traditional drumming performances, street parades, and vibrant cultural exhibitions that highlight the Garifuna’s contributions to Belizean society. Music is at the heart of the celebrations, and you’ll hear the infectious sounds of the Garifuna drumbeat everywhere you go.

One of the most iconic parts of the celebration is the early morning reenactment of the Garifuna landing. The reenactment usually takes place at sunrise and is a powerful visual reminder of the Garifuna people’s arrival in Belize. Watching this emotional ceremony unfold along the shores is an experience you’ll remember long after your trip.

 Garifuna traditions

In addition to the reenactments, there are many opportunities to immerse yourself in Garifuna culture throughout the day. Taste traditional Garifuna dishes such as hudut (a savory fish and coconut stew) and cassava bread, and take part in dance performances that bring Garifuna history to life through rhythmic movements and storytelling. It’s a day full of learning, joy, and respect for one of Belize’s most important cultural groups.

During these months, the weather is predominantly sunny and warm, offering the perfect backdrop for outdoor adventures and leisurely beach days.

The green season, which lasts from June to November, brings more unpredictable weather, with brief but intense showers. However, this period also brings a lush, rejuvenated landscape and fewer tourists, making it an appealing choice for those who prefer a more secluded experience.

St. Herman’s Blue Hole National Park

inland blue hole belize

Located in Belize’s western Cayo District near the capital of Belmopan, St. Herman’s Blue Hole National Park is a site of natural beauty spanning more than 500 acres (2 square kilometers) in size. Three of the principal attractions are the inland Blue Hole, St. Herman’s Cave, and the Crystal Cave.

Visitors to the park usually enter off the Hummingbird Highway. Located about 200 yards from the visitor center is St. Herman’s Cave which was used for centuries by Maya priests to conduct ceremonies and to collect water dripping from stalactites that they considered to be holy. St. Herman’s Cave is an enormous underground structure but it is possible for unguided visitors to make their way approximately 200 yards into the cave before they will need a trained guide to go further. At the rear of the cave is a stream, allowing visitors to float their way back to the cave entrance using an inner tube.

St. Herman’s Cave is connected by an underground stream to the Blue Hole, often referred to as the Inland Blue Hole to prevent confusion with the Belize Blue Hole located offshore in the Belize Barrier Reef. The (Inland) Blue Hole is where the underground stream comes to the surface, providing visitors with a source of cool and refreshing water for swimming. Formed by the collapse of a cavern, the Blue Hole measures about 8 meters (26 feet) deep and is almost perfectly round with a diameter of 100 meters (330 feet).

Beyond the Blue Hole lies the Crystal Cave, sometimes called the Mountain Cow Cave. Visitors will need the assistance of a trained guide to explore spectacularly beautiful stalactites and caverns shimmering with accumulated crystalline structures. Just as with St. Herman’s Cave, the Crystal Cave was a sacred cite for the Ancient Maya who believed that it was a nexus to the world of the gods.

During the path to the country’s independence, Belize acquired the land in and around St. Herman’s Cave, declaring it a park on November 23, 1986. In order to maintain and preserve the natural beauty of the park, foreign non-profit organizations were brought in. Currently, St. Herman’s Blue Hole National Park is maintained and operated by the Belize Audubon Society.

The park is located approximately 12 miles southeast of Belmopan and both entrances are located immediately adjacent to the Hummingbird Highway. The principle entrance leads to a visitor center, gift shop, hiking trails, a picnic area and the path to St. Herman’s Cave. The second entrance leads to a picnic area, hiking trails, washrooms and leads directly to the Blue Hole.

What Winter Looks Like in Belize

When many people return home from a winter vacation in Belize and share their photos with their friends, the pictures are often mistakenly believed to have been taken in summer. That’s a pretty common mistake to make because winter in Belize is a time of long, sunny days and warm temperatures.

Indeed, the “winter” months are when the weather in Belize is at its finest. Rain is very rare, and most days are long and filled with liquid sunshine. And warm temperatures mean that winter in Belize is a great time to enjoy activities such as swimming, snorkeling, sailing, fishing, and scuba diving.

The average dress code for Belize in winter is a T-shirt, a pair of shorts, and a comfortable pair of sandals or flip-flops. Dining outdoors is yet another pleasure that visitors can enjoy in Belize, tasting some of the country’s fantastic seafood, organic produce, and delicious culinary influences from the country’s different ethnic groups. And since English is the official language, it’s easy to get around and talk to locals.

Airlines have certainly taken note of the fantastic weather in Belize during the winter. The six biggest airlines in North America now fly non-stop to Belize throughout the winter. The latest addition is Jet Blue, which will begin flying from New York City to Belize City in December 2023.

Other popular activities to enjoy in Belize during the winter include touring ancient Maya sites such as Xunantunich and Cahal Pech, exploring the vast Cockscomb Basin Wilderness Refuge (home to the world’s only jaguar conservation project), watching endangered manatees play in mangrove-lined lagoons, bird watching, zip lining, hiking through pristine rainforests, and boat safaris along the aptly named Monkey River.

“Winter truly is a great time to visit Belize,” said Larry France, marketing manager at Chabil Mar. “When snow is falling across much of North America, Belize is enjoying sunny, blue skies and warm temperatures, perfect weather for swimming, snorkeling, diving, or simply enjoying a walk along the beach.”

Chabil Mar is an award-winning luxury beachfront resort located on the Placencia Peninsula in southern Belize. Nim Li Punit “The Big Hat”

Nim Li Punit may be one of the smallest Maya sites ever discovered in Belize, but its name translated from the local Mayan dialect means “Big Hat.” Although no one knows its ancient name, the city of Nim Li Punit is named after a carved figure found at the site wearing a big headdress.

Nim Li Punit is located in southern Belize in the Toledo District. To get to Nim Li Punit, take the Southern Highway 25 miles north from Punta Gorda or 50 miles south of Belmopan until you reach the turnoff at the villages of Indian Creek and Golden Stream. Follow the dirt road about 5 kilometers until you reach the turn off for Nim Li Punit.

For visitors arriving by ground transportation, you’ll be dropped off at the visitor center. Inside, you’ll see an elegant building made from local materials along with artifacts found at the site. The visitor center also has displays depicting the language, food, dance, and other cultural characteristics of the Maya.

Some of the most interesting monuments found in Nim Li Punit are the 26 stelae or large columns of stone, many of which are intricately carved with Maya hieroglyphs and pictures. Most of the stelae were found in an enormous square now called the Plaza of the Stelae.

Nim Li Punit was founded more than 2,500 years ago. Today, the remains of three plazas have been excavated, including several pyramids, one of which reaches 12.2 meters (40 feet) in height. Other interesting attractions include one of the best-preserved Maya ball courts ever found, completely intact and ready for a game.

Closer examination of the buildings in Nim Li Punit will reveal that they are precisely aligned according to Maya beliefs about the order of the universe, with the earth at its center. To the north, a collection of shrines and funerary monuments represents the sky world.

At the end of the terrace called Structure One, the ancient Maya built a series of monuments that were used to take incredibly precise astronomical calculations. The Maya calendar consisted of 365 days divided into 18 months, each with 20 days, and an “extra” month that had just five days.

Archeologists believe that Nim Li Punit was once part of the territory belonging to an ancient Maya dynasty that also ruled nearby cities like Uxbenka, Pusilha, and Lubaantun.

Chabil Mar offers tours to Nim Li Punit and other popular Maya sites in Belize.
