Why Placencia Belize is the Hottest Travel Destination of 2016

If you smiled when you read the headline, you may already know the answers. Placencia Belize is a hot spot for multiple reasons: you’ll find all the hot weather you desire when snow falls on your coat, affordability makes this a hot destination most of the year, and you won’t find more variety in the place that’s both a quaint village and a verdant peninsula. Need more convincing? Keep reading.

If you’re going to make the most of your vacation in Placencia, you require accommodations that will keep you close to everything this area has to offer, so choosing Chabil Mar Villas, as so many travel authorities recommend, gets your holiday off to the right start. Chabil Mar gives paradise a run for its money and since the name of this luxe resort means “Beautiful Sea,” the 400-feet of Caribbean beach, just steps away from your beautifully-appointed villa facing the sea, offers all of the privacy, amenities and service you desire.

Using your Chabil Mar quarters as a base, take time to explore the peninsula. This ecologically splended area is home to some of Mother Nature’s finest work, so both your eyes and your spirit will be treated to a bounty of wonder. Visit a virgin mangrove-lagoon that’s so ancient and unspoiled, even elusive, endangered Manatees visit. Close proximity to lush, fascinating jungles and rainforests make for exceptional inland adventures that don’t require endless travel time to reach them.

Since Placencia residents are serious about conservation, you benefit as a visitor. Everywhere you travel you’ll be charmed by birds, butterflies, iguanas, flowers, trees, plants and lush gardens. Reverence for the land is not new to Placencia residents; this peninsula’s history is thousands of years old. Mayans may have left their mark before vanishing, but by the 17th century, North Americans, followed by Spaniards, colonized Belize and the Spanish stuck around long enough to bestow the peninsula’s name: Placencia or Pleasant.

Perhaps because this area has been such a melting pot over time, Placencia has a proud history of welcoming people from all points on the compass, so when you visit, you’ll find an international mix of residents, ex-pats and tourists alike. Walk the streets of Placencia village and you’ll as likely run into Chinese immigrants as those whose native tongue is German or members of the region’s Garifuna society, yet everyone speaks English so you can converse with them all.

Getting to know the people of Placencia is a delightful experience, but the excursions, tours, activities and adventures in which you engage will remain forever in your memory. Chat with Chabil Mar Resort hosts and they will take care of booking details so you see and do everything you’ve dreamed about: snorkeling, diving, fishing, tours to see Belize’s Howler Monkey population, river and cave tours, sailing, river kayaking and the unforgettable Belize Barrier Reef that’s so close Placencia, can be geared up for your first dive into the Caribbean Sea in no time.

When you’ve had your fill of nature and history, stroll the village where you will encounter every sort of entertainment and service you require. From fine dining at Placencia bistros to street vendors offering tasty servings of rice and beans and stew chicken to tourists who don’t want to sit down long enough to eat because they’re too busy shopping, having fun and sending selfies back home—it won’t take long for you to discover why Placencia is the only place to visit in 2016.

TripAdvisor Names Laughing Bird Caye #1 on its “Things to do in Placencia” List

laughing bird caye belize

We’re of the opinion that the birds that formerly nested on Laughing Bird Caye got the last laugh. They flew elsewhere for peace and quiet when tourists began flocking to this sliver of land. The species known as Laughing Gulls did what smart birds do: they relocated and left no forwarding addresses. But they’re no fools; they got naming rights.

These days, Laughing Bird Caye offers visitors more than 10,000 acres of pristine marine attractions, including the island itself, which is composed of coral reef patches that embrace a central lagoon. The island sits atop an elongated ridge with steep sides, which is why geologists refer to it as a faro or atoll rather than an island.

Given it’s unique design, configuration and natural resources, Laughing Bird Caye was declared a protected reserve decades ago by the Belize government. Members of a Placencia-based community group called Friends of Nature work hard to keep it that way.

Located about 12 miles from Placencia beaches in the Stann Creek District, this Caye offers plenty to do. Relax on palm tree-graced beaches that invite swimmers to jump into the Caribbean or ask about popular dive sites in the vicinity. Your best course of action is to book a licensed tour operator to take you out on any or all of these adventures: fishing, snorkeling and diving.

Make your life easier by using Chabil Mar Resort  in Placencia as your home base. Not only will you enjoy luxury accommodations, but staff is delighted to book you on any of the tours you prefer, from the aforementioned sports to roaming around Laughing Bird Caye to see what geologists rave about: the southern-most point on the Belize Barrier Reef. The variety of coral habitats in the area is striking and the marine wildlife that flocks to the reef is breathtaking.

While conservationists are happy that Laughing Bird Caye was designated as protected on two occasions—in 1981 and 1991—and received World Heritage Site status, they will have to share the glory with tourism. In 2015, TripAdvisor named Laughing Bird Caye first on its list of “Things to do in Placencia,” no easy fete for an area that took many years to find its true destiny as a wildlife refuge and relaxation spot  for travelers.

Will the birds be back once they realize that so many protections now exist for them? Naturalists hope so. Ongoing efforts to bring the gulls home to set up new rookeries don’t stop just because this has become a popular tourist spot. Besides, with digs like Chabil Mar to return to each day, visitors will want to spend plenty of down time at the resort, leaving returning birds plenty of alone time.

USA Today recommends Belize as a prime location for a destination wedding

Cake & Fruit Wedding Chabil Mar Resort BelizeThe popular website www.usatoday.com is recommending Belize as a prime location for a destination wedding on a budget.

Here is what Jane Reynolds, the author of the article says about Belize:

Belize offers visitors more diversity than your run-of-the-mill beach destination, and flight prices are about the same as those you’d find to popular wedding locales such as Mexico. Not only does Belize boast beautiful sandy beaches, but it’s also home to lush rainforests, Mayan ruins and the second-largest barrier reef in the world. And once you’re there, it’s easy enough to save some green — and go green, for that matter. Belize has very few expensive mega-resorts and instead is dotted by eco-lodges and inns where room and board can be found cheap — if you’re willing to give up some “luxuries” such as air-conditioning and Wi-Fi. Another perk? With lobster being a local specialty, it comes much cheaper here than stateside, so you can impress wedding guests with a lobster dinner for a lot less.

Belize Proves that Small Pleasures Equal Unforgettable Holidays

placencia belize

You should probably stop reading now if your idea of an idyllic vacation includes grandiose hotels, stylish restaurants that require reservations days in advance and if you are enamored of an environment in which you’re busy night and day! On the other hand, if the idea of a boutique Belize resort that’s so small and exclusive you could blend into the gorgeous scenery intrigues you, keep reading. Small pleasures can mean the difference between a forgettable holiday and one that’s so remarkable, you’re willing to pay your airline a fee to change your flight to a later date!

If you’ve dashed around Europe and awakened each day wondering where you are, you’re not alone. Choose Belize for your destination and this eminently manageable country is going to give you experiences unlike anything you recall, because proximity spells accessibility. Use the exclusive Chabil Mar as your home base and you’re a short drive or walk from a wealth of attractions and sites, which is just one of the reasons TripAdvisor gave this Belize resort a 2015 Traveler’s Choice Award for the ninth consecutive year. Isn’t it time you visited a place small enough to explore everything within reach rather than whizzing by it all?

There are plenty of reasons to headquarter at Chabil Mar, not the least of which is its reputation for being the quintessential barefoot luxury guest resort. It’s small. Exclusive. You couldn’t get lost in a crowd if you tried. Check into the full service resort that’s just a ¾-mile stroll along the beach from Placencia Village and tuck into one of the 19 beautifully appointed villas on the property that sprawls along 400 feet of Caribbean shoreline. Chabil Mar’s tiny village-like setting has no shortage of amenities despite its size. Have your fill of time on the resort’s private pier, hire a boat, dip into two infinity swimming pools and stroll lush gardens before you taste yummy Caribbean cuisine at the Café Mar.

When you are ready to go out and about, there’s no better or more navigable haven than Placencia Village. With a population of just 1,500 Belizeans, your stroll to the town center quickly inserts you into a vibrant hub that’s far from madding crowds, yet the shops, stalls and attractions will feed your need for the flavor of Belize. Dare we mention the friendly, bi-lingual merchants? The Saturday town market is likely to have all of the souvenir and gift needs you require when you’re ready to come home, and once you’ve had your fill, stroll back to your beach umbrella to resume reading or snoozing.

The wealth of plants and wildlife found within Belize (60-percent of the country is forested) is astonishing and shouldn’t be missed. See exotic birds, 4,000 species of flowers (250 of them orchids), easily navigated caves and Maya archaeological sites that stun and inspire.

Organized tours take the work out of planning and there are so many opportunities to indulge in water sports close to Placencia and Chabil Mar, you needn’t worry about spending half your holiday getting to and from them. Kayaks and canoes get you inside caves, down rivers, around lagoons and through forests where waterfalls await. Miss opportunities to visit the underwater world off Belize? Not a chance.
