Fall in Love with Belize’s Placencia Peninsula

placencia peninsula belize

Is it possible to fall madly in love with an entire peninsula? The answer is yes–if that finger of land is named Placencia. Mother Nature must have loved her handiwork when she finished this gorgeous sliver of land because she included every sort of topography a visitor could desire: 16 miles of sandy beach, mountains that hug the horizon, a tranquil lagoon and the Caribbean Sea. The area’s first settlers and descendants have nurtured this land over time by putting down deep roots so the peninsula is a perfectly-balanced mix of tropical green space, natural wonders and enough bistros, guest houses, luxury resorts and other amenities to satisfy anyone in search of a paradise.

The Placencia Peninsula

Feel free to circumnavigate the entire peninsula riding a beach cruiser bike because a car isn’t necessary to take in every inch of scenery. Visit the Garifuna Village in Seine Bight if you’re traveling from north to south. This cultural enclave is filled with color, music, food and fun courtesy of a distinct lifestyle established by residents whose ancestors settled here so long ago.

In close proximity to Belize’s acclaimed barrier reef, Garifuna Village is just the first stop on a journey to more populated areas further down the coast where sports enthusiasts can use the coastline as a jumping off point for kayaking, snorkeling, saltwater fly fishing, diving and other aquatic fun. No matter what your itinerary may include, you’ll find so many guides, dive shops and other commercial enterprises on the Placencia Peninsula, all you need do is pack shorts and leave the work of organizing your gear to everyone else!

The wonder of Placencia Village

Located at the south tip of the isthmus, it’s so perfectly designed for fun in the sun, the area lacks for nothing. Indulge your sensibilities with rainforest hikes, mountain trails, Mayan ruins, the Belize Barrier Reef and deserted atolls perfect for exploring.

Placencia offers fast access to protected spots like Laughing Bird Caye, Gladden Spit, Monkey River, the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary and cave tubing opportunities, yet the village is a perennially popular social hub known for island cooking that ranges from local fare to gourmet delights. Shop ‘til you drop. Load up on Belize’s signature chocolates, wines and beers. It’s not unusual for visitors to say that they spent a week in Placencia Village and plan to return because they missed so much!

Family Adventure Travel to Belize This Summer

The hottest trend in family vacations is called eco-tourism. Instead of waiting in line at an amusement park, a family eco-tourism is a chance for everyone to put down their smartphones, get outside, and enjoy bonding in some of the most beautiful places on the planet.

If you’re going on a family adventure vacation to Belize, here are some of the things you can enjoy:

Attend the Placencia Lobsterfest

Who likes lobster? Everybody! The Placencia Lobsterfest is three days of fun in the sun, with plenty of food, games, live music, and activities to keep the whole family entertained.

Dive With Whale Sharks

Few experiences can compare to diving with whale sharks, the largest non-mammalian animal in the ocean. Whale sharks only visit Belize once a year, making their annual arrival a truly special event.

Visit Placencia Village

This charming fishing village has the unique pleasure of holding the Guinness World Record for the smallest main street. It also has colorful murals, funky shops, and cool cafes.

Go On a Nature Tour

Whether it’s an educational boat excursion along the well-named Monkey River or a hike through the pristine wilderness of the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, a nature tour is a great way to learn more about plants, birds, and animals.

Visit an Ancient Maya City

Your whole family will love the thrill of “discovering” an Ancient Maya city located deep in the jungle. Cities such as Lubantuum and Xunantunich allow children and adults to learn more about Central America’s most advanced ancient culture that built the enormous pyramids, palaces, and temples that dot the Belizean landscape today.

Explore the Creepy ATM Cave

Abandoned and forgotten for more than 1,000 years, the Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Cave was accidentally rediscovered in 1989. You’ll have to swim, crawl, and climb to get to the deepest chamber in the cave, but the effort will be well worth it. Discovered in the cave are the remains of men, women, and children who had been offered up as human sacrifices to the gods by Maya priests.

Chabil Mar Villas

If you’re ready to create unforgettable family memories this summer, choose Chabil Mar Villas. Located on the beautiful Placencia Peninsula in southeastern Belize, Chabil Mar is an award-winning family resort and a perennial TripAdvisor favorite.

Chabil Mar has its own stretch of private beach, two infinity pools, a lush tropical garden, and a gourmet restaurant. Chabil Mar is close to all of the top attractions in the country on both the mainland and the reef.

A Tropical Belize Vacation This Summer: It's Always a Good Time for a Réunion

Don’t listen to the folks who insist that the only time one should consider a Caribbean reunion is during the winter when coats, snow shovels, and doing “donuts” on icy streets puts both motorists and pedestrians at risk. They’re just whining about the weather while you relax in front of a fireplace dreaming about organizing that summer reunion when prices are low and there are no crowds. What’s the secret to staging an unforgettable summer reunion? Planning, of course.

CNN Highlights Local Efforts to Protect Sharks in Belize

belize sharks

CNN World recently highlighted the combined efforts of local Belizean fishermen and MarAlliance, a non-profit organization in Belize that is working around the clock to preserve shark species along the Belize Barrier Reef.

The group efforts which have already yielded a reported 300% increase in shark population along the Lighthouse Reef, located 50 miles off the coast of Belize were featured on CNN’s Call to Earth series, a program that reports on environmental challenges facing our planet as well as the solutions.

In it, the series highlighted the efforts to reverse the decline in sharks which in turn also reverse the decline in a range of other species that are associated with sharks and their critical habitat, something that provides greater economic and conservation benefits for everyone.

Spearheading the initiative on the ground is Rachel Graham, the founder of MarAlliance, who along with her team of locals, is engaged in an ongoing shark population census, along the reef that requires the catching, tagging, and releasing of sharks back into the sea. Since 2007 MarAlliance has also been using scientific longline, Baited Remote Underwater Video (BRUV) to analyze long-term trends in the abundance of the sharks at Lighthouse Reef

She told CNN, ”what we are seeing now is nothing less than miraculous, we are seeing a comeback of sharks. At Lighthouse reef, we have seen a 300 % increase in sharks. My vision for this reef is every time I roll over backward from a boat in order to dive or snorkel I am going to see at least one shark.”

Graham said that the reef acts as an important corridor for migrating animals, and creates a highway for animals to be guided and navigate by. However, due to their naturally vulnerable state when traveling and the predictability of their migratory nature, underwater species can easily get intercepted when traveling from point A to point B. That according to Graham is where sharks come in since they are known to keep the various population in check. Since more sharks in the ocean mean more varieties of fish available for daily catch as well as ecotourism.

So what’s threatening the shark population around the globe? Graham says it’s overfishing, primarily for human consumption in shark fin soup, a popular dish in China and South East Asia. While it is estimated that sharks would usually kill around 10 or fewer humans worldwide, annually, humans are killing approximately one hundred million shark species at the same time. This according to Graham is proving detrimental to the species as well as the environment.

”What we are seeing is a highly threatened set of species that takes so long to mature that they don’t usually have many young and they are so critical to the health of our oceans primarily because they help regulate a range of other species that they feed on. So they keep the populations in check, ” explained Graham.

CNN also mentioned Belize’s move to ban the possession and use of gillnets in Belize’s marine waters in November 2020. A move that Graham applauded and attributed to the miraculous increase of the shark population along the Belize Barrier Reef.

CNN also spoke to Fisher Associate, Ivan Torres, ”To all my fellow fishermen, I want to give you this message, conserve sharks because in the future it can provide us with an income not being dead or by fishing them but by being alive.”
