8 Things Every Traveler Should Know Before Visiting Belize

Belize Facts

Travelers who leave home without researching their destinations miss out on so much! You needn’t be a Rhodes Scholar to undertake that research, but having tips on where to go and what to do not only make getaways more enjoyable, but more personal, educational, and exciting.

These 8 helpful tips will get you off to a great start.

1. Congratulate yourself on choosing a nation of English speakers! Not only will you converse with Belizeans on a more personal level, but you won’t get lost either. Your brain will appreciate your destination choice too since you won’t have to rely upon a language app to get you through the day.

2. Get on island time as soon as you arrive. The laid-back vibe that pervades the entirety of Belize is palpable and real, offering you centeredness and calmness you likely don’t enjoy back home as life sweeps you up into a vortex of activity that makes days speed by.

3. Take advantage of the world’s best aquatic sports. The coast of Placencia hosts Central America’s most beautiful beaches from which all marine adventures originate — especially those in proximity to Belize’s barrier reef. From snorkeling and diving to sailing, swimming, kayaking, and fishing, you’ll feel you’ve arrived in Valhalla minus the Vikings and winter weather!

4. Experience so many wildlife habitats, you could stop visiting zoos. Belize is home to endangered and protected species that make their homes on land and by sea. You could spot a jaguar, ocelots, cougars, jaguarundi, manatees, tapir, macaws, toucans, Howler monkeys, sea turtles, and friendly sharks during your stay. The number of tours available to tourists eager to see as much wildlife as possible are extensive.

5. No currency dilemmas! Remember when Europe was awash in currencies and every time you crossed a border you had to memorize a new exchange rate? Relax. In Belize, you can use U.S. dollars and the exchange rate is so simple, kids remember it: $1USD = $2BZD.

6. The sun is always shining in tropical Belize, even when it’s cloudy! Wear sun blockers. When out and about, enjoy the locals and know the way back to your home in Belize, just like you would do at your native home.

7. Visiting Belize without touring Maya ruins is sacrilege! The nation is home to around 900 ancient sites that range from starter digs to cities once home to thousands of Mayas. To find out which ones are most likely to delight you during your stay, view this information and ask staff to book your tours.

The Best Birding in Southern Belize

bird watching vacations belize

Belize has long been a birder’s best-kept secret. In fact, some people say that if you’re not a birder when you arrive in Belize, you’ll be one by the time you leave.

Almost half of the land in Belize is managed as reserves, wildlife sanctuaries, national parks, and protected habitats. Many are managed by the Belize Audubon Society and these protected areas provide a rich diversity of natural ecosystems where birds thrive.

Southern Belize is the primary location for bird lovers looking for keel-billed toucans, ringed and pygmy kingfishers, pale-billed woodpeckers, squirrel cuckoos, pygmy owls, hummingbirds, keel-billed motmots, scarlet macaws and every species of parrot and parakeet imaginable. And don’t forget our local chachalaca birds, purple gallinules, spotted sandpipers, black catbirds and the list goes on and on.

What’s more, you’ll see all of these marvelous birds in settings that are breathtakingly beautiful. The following are some prime birding spots in southern Belize.

Red Bank Village

Red Bank is a Maya village located near Placencia. The community is a favorite hangout of vivid, fast-flying scarlet macaws that flock here to find food. For the past 10 years, the village has cooperated with conservation groups to monitor and protect the macaws. Sadly, scarlet macaws are endangered, so this is a rare opportunity to spot these beautiful birds in their natural habitat.

Aguacaliente

Aguacaliente Wildlife Sanctuary protects more than 6000 acres of wetlands ecosystems. Getting there requires a two-hour hike from the village of Laguna in Toledo District. In the lagoons, you’ll see egrets, herons, wood storks, flycatchers, ibis and kingfishers. You might see jabiru storks, another rare and endangered species. It’s a good idea to visit Aguacaliente with a guide.

Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary

Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary is the world’s first jaguar preserve and an important watershed conservation area. You’ll see a huge variety of animals, plants, and birds here, including white-collared manikins, crimson-collared and masked tanagers, bat falcons and more.

Sir Thomas at Toucan Sittee

Sir Thomas at Toucan Sittee is located in southern Belize. It is s privately-owned bird sanctuary where one birder reported seeing 100 different species in an hour. The top birds you will encounter at this location include kingfishers, hummingbirds, toucans, and parakeets.

If you’re already packing your bags and binoculars, make sure you book your stay at Chabil Mar. Our resort offers luxury accommodations in Placencia Village and our “Treasures of the Sky” Belize birding package provides guided tours led by local experts to top birding spots in the country.

Before You Retire in Placencia Belize, Check Out The Destination with a Stay at Chabil Mar

If you are planning on retiring in the not-too-distant future, you may have begun considering where you would like to spend your golden years. However, for many Americans and Canadians, the answer is quite simple – Placencia, Belize.

The region is already home to a large number of expats and retirees. This is due, in no small part, to its year-round sunshine and welcoming atmosphere. Of course, people who move to Placencia from the United States or Canada also appreciate the fact that English is widely spoken throughout Belize.

If you choose to retire to Placencia, you can expect to spend your days lounging at the beach, fishing in nearby lakes and rivers, or simply exploring the natural beauty of Belize. If you would prefer a more adventurous lifestyle in your retirement, you can even take up hiking, visit the ancient Maya temples, or even go zip lining or cave tubing in one of Belize’s many caves. Put simply, there are a lot of things to see and do in Belize – no matter what your preferred pastimes may be.

Despite the fact that it has been prominently featured on a number of international travel shows, Placencia remains a relatively small and laid-back destination. Indeed, Placencia is home to just one main street, as well as a small pedestrian-only walkway. You certainly won’t find any busy roads or large highways here.

With so much to offer, you might expect Placencia to be an extraordinarily expensive place to live. However, this is certainly not the case. In fact, most of the expats and retirees in the area would probably agree that the cost of living in Placencia is much more affordable than anything you might find in the United States or Canada.

If you think that Placencia might be your dream retirement destination, it is a good idea to spend some time there to scope out retirement homes or real estate opportunities that appeal to you.

While visiting, you can use the beautiful Chabil Mar Resort as your base of operations. The resort is situated right on the beach and features lush tropical gardens, luxury villas, two infinity pools, roaming butler services, a restaurant, a private pier, and much more. There is, quite simply, no better place to begin your Belizean adventure than at Chabil Mar.

Destiny Wagner is Miss Earth 2021 – Makes History For Belize

Destiny Wagner is Miss Earth 2021

The Miss Earth competition is more than just a beauty pageant. For two decades, its contestants have put a spotlight on the environmental challenges facing the modern world — and while its contestants are certainly all beautiful, they each come to the stage with their own nuanced and sophisticated stances on the issues. But this year’s competition holds special importance to the people of Belize. Destiny Wagner has been crowned Miss Earth 2021, and it’s the first time that a Belizean has won a major international beauty pageant.

There couldn’t be a more fitting recipient for Miss Earth. Despite having received her education in New York, Destiny has kept home close to her heart. She’s been the editor and primary contributor to “Belizean Blues”: a collection that places the spotlight on authors from Belize. But her investment in the Miss Earth competition is more than just a platform for her own brand. Destiny’s long been an ardent environmentalist, and she worked with Clear Water Aquarium in a manatee research study. It’s not her only passion project. Destiny’s family runs Operation Kingdom, a non-profit that looks to combat inequality by advocating for fair education and accessible meals for vulnerable youth.

The effects of climate change have a tendency to show their most disastrous and immediate impact on marginalized communities in less developed nations, but Destiny is hopeful that technology can serve as a lever for equality and a means to wrestle with the impact of climate change. She addressed the issue during her acceptance speech. “I am so thankful to live in a digital age right now. Because of technology, we are able to spread awareness of things that are happening not only in my country but in other countries as well.” Belize is a country that’s wrestled with the difficult task of balancing the sometimes conflicting needs of the economy with the need for conservation. The country is home to the Belize Barrier Reef — the second largest ecosystem of its kind behind Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. Today, Belize has found a careful path forward, and sustainable eco-tourism is a cornerstone of the country’s success.

As Miss Earth 2022, Destiny will spend the next year promoting environmental initiatives and spreading awareness about the complicated effects it has on our environment and our societies.

The staff of Chabil Mar congratulate Destiny Wagner on her win, and we look forward to cheering on our new Miss Earth as she continues to make history for Belize.
